Club History
The Rockingham Triathlon Club was officially formed as a club on 24th February 1993. It came about when a group of mates from Rockingham kept bumping into each other at various triathlon events.
It was Dave Stewart who can be attributed to it's formation, with the first meeting being held at the Stewart's abode on the above date.
Our first coaches were Tim "A-Grade" Roberts and Laurie Plecas, and it was Tim Roberts and Wayne Plecas who lit up the WA triathlon scene in those early days.
The inaugural club committee members were:
President
- Dave Stewart
Secretary - Geoff Amos
Treasurer - Laurie Plecas
Since then we have had for president Dave Stewart (1993-95, 2001-04), Geoff Amos (1996), Lloyd Mansfield (1997-98), Laurie Plecas (1999), Gloria Stewart (2000), Peter Hartnett (2005-2005), Nikki Gunthorpe (2007), Shayne Dimmer (2008-10) and current president Josh Mann (2011).
The first Interclub at Mandurah on 22 May 1994 - reduced to a 500m beach sprint, cycle and run courtesy of some abysmal weather, saw RTC place 3rd in both the Champion Club and the President's Most Consistent Club.
Splash n Dash races at Rockingham Beach made its debut into the RTC calendar every month starting from Friday 15 September 1996. Ian Mansfield was the man behind the races . The first race saw 14 seniors and 9 juniors toe the line. Eventual winners were Dave Boyes (seniors) and Christian Kahe (juniors). The splash n dash races went for about close to 10 years. They were reinvigorated in 2009 and have been going strong ever since.
Every March for quite a few years, Mandurah Tri Club and RTC competed for the "Greatest Triathlon Club in the Universe"award, or the "Smelly Shoe Trophy" as it became known as. This consisted of two Splash n Dash races, one held at Mandurah and one at Rockingham. Mandurah won the first event.
8th February 2004 was a big day in the history of Rockingham Triathlon Club: We held our first event for juniors. Dave Stewart and Geoff Amos were the organisers, with the races being held at Long Point. Our three race series had humble beginnings, starting off with just 7 competitors. They were Troy Main, Kelly Sheard, Jenelle Crooks, Jessica Baldey, Rebecca Van Kesteren, Bradley Dimmer and Sophie Dimmer. Justin Amos and Blake Lee made their debut in the 2nd race, with Matt Rimmer and Elise Kirk racing for the first time in the 3rd race.
The following year we became a TRYstars club, a national junior triathlon program run by Triathlon Australia. Numbers swelled to 54. Currently we have about 80 TRYstars and are one of the largest TRYstars clubs in Australia!!!! Geoff and Julie Amos continued with the TRYstars program up until 2009, after which the reins were handed over to current organisers Josh and Tiff Mann.
